Our Story
How It All Began
Len first took up judo in 1967, aged 27, after becoming bored with circuit training and deciding to try something different.
He enjoyed it so much that he eventually started teaching others.
He began running small judo sessions in his garden in Popley, Basingstoke, with just six to eight children.
As interest grew, the club moved to John Hunt of Everest School. Inspired by the school’s name, Len called it Summit Judo Club, a reference to the summit, or very top, of Mount Everest.
What began as a few children learning judo in a garden has now been part of the Basingstoke community for more than 50 years.

Len’s Years in Judo
Len has spent decades teaching judo to children and adults, passing on his knowledge and helping students develop their skills.
One of the people he remembers particularly well is Tony Bailey.
Len taught Tony when he first started martial arts. Tony later went on to achieve 8th Dan in jujitsu.
It’s something Len is understandably proud of, having helped Tony at the beginning of his journey.
Over the years, Len has seen generations of students come through the club, from complete beginners to experienced judoka.
More Than a Club. We’re a Family.
Summit has always been about more than learning judo.
It’s a friendly club where children and adults train together, friendships develop and families get to know one another.
Some members have been involved for years, while others are just starting out. Everyone is welcome, whatever their experience or ability.
The club takes judo seriously, but there’s always room for a laugh and a bit of fun along the way.
That friendly atmosphere is what makes Summit special.
